Chapter 1: The Portal

A young boy walked home from school on a typical Friday afternoon thinking that tomorrow he would have his normal day, but he was wrong.

Tom got in through the front door to find every thing as usual; his mum cooking dinner, his dad watching TV and his five brothers upstairs in their rooms playing on their games consoles.

“Mum, I’m home!” Tom shouted through the house.
“I’m in the kitchen!” she shouted back.
“As usual,” he muttered.

Tom walked upstairs and entered his bedroom. He got changed out of his school uniform and into his casuals.

That night after he had eaten his dinner, had a bath and brushed his teeth, he got into bed and tried to sleep, but he couldn’t, something about the night was uneasy. He got out of bed and walked over to his window, then just as he looked out, a shooting star passed and he made a wish, “I wish I could have a day when everything was different.” And with that he went back to bed and slept until the morning sun.

He awoke at 9:30am and went down to get his breakfast. His two little brothers Simon and Stuart who were twins were fighting over the last bowl of Sugar Puffs. He shook his head, grabbed the Cheerios from the shelf and poured himself a bowl and went into the living room. His other three brothers were already watching TV. He sat down next to Ben his next older brother. On the other sofa was Mikey and Phill his two even older brothers. Tom finished his cereal and brushed his teeth. Then he went out to one of his friends’ house. He took his usual route through the park and across the main road. He was running through the park when he tripped and bumped his head on something causing him to fall unconscious.

When he awoke a figure was standing above him but his vision was blurred and all he could see was the man's outline.

“Are you alright?” said the mysterious figure.
“Who are you?” said Tom.
“Ah I am Chris.”

Tom’s vision adjusted and he could see that Chris was a well-built middle-aged man with a close to bald head.

“Where am I?”
“You are on the island of time.”
“The island of what?” Tom said with a very curious expression on his face.

Chris laughed a slight chuckle then repeated, “the island of time, a small island in the middle of nowhere."
“How’d I get here?” said Tom “I remember running through Grove Park and then falling over, the next thing I know I’m lying here with you standing over me."
“Well in my opinion you must have gone through an invisible barrier in time and space.”

Tom sat there with a very confused look on his face. “What about my family, my friends and my school?”
“Ah,” said Chris, “well if you fall through the time hole then all time in your world stops until you get back, but look on the bright side at least you won't age and at least your family are here somewhere.”
“What?! My family are here to?”
“Oh yes didn’t I mention that, when you fall through the time hole all loved ones automatically come through after you,” he said, “but they don’t come through and stay normal, oh no no when they come through they change and don’t change back until you remind them who they are.”
“So if I don’t remind them who they are and I get back to my world do they still stay changed?” said Tom.
“Uh yes, unfortunately that is the way it works.”

Tom sat there with a very worried look on his face. “Hang on, so how did you get on this island?”
“Well,” said Chris, “my wife Rachel and I, are the lone human inhabitants of this island. We came here from your world but remained here so long, that all life in your world stopped waiting for us to return and carried on. All our family forgot about us and as far as they are concerned we never existed.”
“Wow,” said Tom, “I didn’t realise that could happen to anyone”
“It can't. From the research I’ve done since being here I’ve found out that the time hole only opens when it senses the presence of someone who could put an end to the reign of the Time King. I suppose it felt you can do it.”
“What about you then, didn’t it feel you could stop him otherwise why would you be here?”
“Yes it did, but I was too old and arrogant to accept that I could do it, so I stayed here all these years to live on this island, waiting for another person to come along and here you are. Any way my wife has dinner going so I better get back. You can join us if you like but I hope you like fish and bread because that’s all we can manage to scavenge from this island.”
